It does not matter how it will appear in your life, your kid might bring it or you might find it near your house or your block and you will not be able to pass up a lonely cub, looking with hope at the eyes of every passersby. Since you have adopted a kitten you take great responsibility for the life of this cub.
You should understand clearly that on surrendering the pity for a little founding and on taking it to your home, you won’t only safe the life of this tiny living creature, but you’ll acquire a family member and a friend for long-long years, and devotion and love of this creature will be truly infinite. That’s why you should pay maximal attention to the kitten and take care of it, especially in its first days at your house.
Kittens can be born by wild street cats (those ones are very fearful, mistrustful, watchful) or by home cats, their bad masters did not invent anything better but let the kittens out, hoping they “would find a new master” by themselves. Those kittens got used from the very birth to trust people, so they run under the feet of passersby with plaintive mewing, not understanding why nobody stops. If wild kittens are somehow accustomed to the street life, the home kittens are almost doomed for the death from hunger, dogs, car wheels or numerous illnesses. That’s why at first you should examine the kitten properly after having taken it at home. If you already have some pets, you’d better not keep them away from the fresher and make some kind of quarantine for it. Thus, you will be able to prevent possible infection of your pets by the founding’s illnesses. When you examine the kitten, pay proper attention to eyes, ears, fur. If you notice strong discharge from the eyes and the nose, if the kitten tosses its head and scratches its ears, where there are lots of dark crusts, also if you find some hairless spots on its fur, do not start the self-treatment, carry the cub to a veterinary.
You shouldn’t make any experiments and try to cure the kitten by all possible medicines from the otodectosis (ears mites) or some herpes, it is at least cruel. If the kitten’s appearance is more or less normal, it may be emaciated, but rather active with clean eyes, ears and skin (as far as it is possible after living on the street), you can eliminate parasites at home and prepare the pet to vaccination.
If the kitten is not very dirty, there is no urgent need to wash it. Now lots of different means of animals’ hair care are available at pet shops: dry shampoos, lotions helping to clean the hair and the skin of animals without causing any stress to the kitten. In the last century books you can still read that it is necessary to wash an adopted kitten with an anti-fleas shampoo. All shampoo has in their content some very toxic substances and theses products are made for normal healthy animals. Meanwhile, a tiny exhausted kitten will have a huge stress because of this bath as well as a large dose of insecticides that will negatively reflect on its broken physical and psychological health. You must not process the cub with insecto-acaricide powder in order to kill fleas. Such kinds of powders are considered as moderate toxic substances, and if some healthy animals endure such processing without any problems in most cases, many kittens, however, can get some serious poisoning. We recommend you Frontline spray (Marial, France) for this purpose; at present it is the most efficient and harmless means to save the animal from external parasites (Frontline is permitted for use for pregnant animals and even for newborn cubs, the overdose will not bring to the poisoning, however it’s better to stick with recommended batching by weight). Frontline does not get into the blood flow; it is distributed by the subcutaneous fat. Having put on disposable gloves, you should pull apart the hair and distribute the spray directly on the kitten’s skin. Then you slightly rub it into the whole body surface. After such processing fleas die almost immediately, and 24 hours later you will surely find no one flea alive.
The nest step is the elimination of helminthes. Without any fears about side effects you can use Drontal for cats (Bayer, Germany), after necessarily batching it by weight. Drontal could be used for pregnant and weak animals and for cubs as well. The biggest advantage of this medicine is that it is efficient at every stage of round worms and tapeworms, so you can give it only once.
You should approach to the feeding of your little founding very responsibly. Most likely the hungry kitten will eat everything you can offer, and then it will suffer from digestion disorders for several days. It does not matter you plan to feed your kitten with industrially made dry pet food or with natural food further, for the first time you’d better buy in a pet shop some “baby” pet food cans produced by well-known companies: Royal Canin, Hills and others. Cans Convalescence Support by Royal Canin and I’d by Hills from medical series will be ideal for feeding your kitten. This pet food contains all necessary easily digested nutritives and vitamins, able to help the little kitten to restore after vagrancy.
It is important to provide your kitten with a good, comfortable tray with some filler in order to teach your pet to the cleanliness from the very first days. At first, you have to watch intently your kitten’s stool; if the pet has a long constipation or ceaseless diarrhea; it is recommended to show your kitten to a veterinary. If the kitten is lucky, and it did not have time to catch any serious virus illness, in 10-14 days after helminthes elimination you will be able to carry your obviously fatter and gladder kitten to a vet for the vaccination in order to defend the pet from the most inflectional and serious cats illnesses.
If the kitten has been infected with widespread cats’ illnesses: such as calciviruses (calcivirus infection), feline panleukopenia, commonly known as feline distemper, or some others, the pet will show within 1-2 weeks the symptoms of the illness (fewer, depression, refuse to eat) you will have to cure the kitten at first. If there are anxious symptoms it is necessary to visit specialists at once, as the probability of kittens death is very high without timely treatment. All attempts to cure serious infections at the kittens by their owners usually bring either to the death of the kitten or to the long virus infection carrier state, then your pet will be very dangerous for other animals.
We don’t want to offend luxurious pedigree cats and kittens, but kittens-founding show to their masters such devotion and adoration that pure-bred ones are hardly capable to. Of course, the cats’ elite love their masters as well, but they take their owners as a source of many good things for them – to eat well, to play with, to scratch the ear. Little ex-tramps are mostly less fastidious in food and less capricious; they try to be always near their adored master. While the kitten remembers all the horror of its homeless life, it will try all-out to “be good”, and its further education depends totally from its masters.
